Family & Systemic Therapy

Family and systemic therapy understands that our difficulties don’t exist in isolation, rather they’re shaped by the relationships and systems we’re part of. Rather than locating the ‘problem’ within one person, this approach looks at patterns of interaction between family members, partners, and the wider network around us.

By working with these relationships and patterns, systemic therapy helps families and couples understand each other better, communicate more effectively, and create change together.

How Systemic Therapy Works

Systemic therapy views people in the context of their relationships and looks at how patterns develop and are maintained between them. Sessions might involve individuals, couples, or several family members together, and can focus on:

  • Understanding repeating patterns of interaction and communication
  • Exploring how each person’s perspective shapes the whole
  • Improving understanding and empathy between family members
  • Strengthening communication and problem-solving as a group
  • Recognising strengths and resources within the family
  • Supporting change that works for everyone involved

The therapist takes a curious, even-handed stance; not taking sides, but helping the whole system understand itself more clearly.

What Family & Systemic Therapy Can Help With

This approach can be helpful for:

  • Family conflict and communication difficulties
  • Relationship and couple difficulties
  • Parenting challenges and family transitions
  • Supporting a family member through illness or mental health difficulties
  • Navigating separation, divorce, or blended families
  • Intergenerational patterns and family life-cycle changes

Family and systemic therapy can involve as many or as few members of the family as is helpful, and we’ll discuss together who it would be useful to include.
