Counselling Psychologist and Existential Psychotherapist

Dr Stephanie Knight is a Counselling Psychologist and Existential Psychotherapist who specialises in addiction, compulsive behaviours and eating disorders. Her particular focus is on how people create meaningful and lasting change by learning to bear themselves and building lives they no longer feel the need to escape. She also works with trauma, burnout, anxiety, depression, grief, relationship difficulties, identity concerns and major life changes.

Existential psychotherapy sits at the heart of Stephanie’s clinical work. Rather than focusing only on symptom reduction, she is interested in how people make sense of their lives, choices, relationships and patterns of behaviour, particularly during periods of change, loss or recovery, and how they can learn to live more skilfully in light of their experiences. Where helpful, she draws on humanistic, psychodynamic, cognitive behavioural, experiential, narrative and somatic approaches.

A significant part of Stephanie’s professional experience has involved working with people whose difficulties are complex or longstanding. Her experience spans NHS and specialist addiction services, where she has supported clients affected by addiction, trauma, co-occurring mental health difficulties, homelessness and social exclusion, as well as those transitioning from residential or more intensive treatment into outpatient therapy.

Her doctoral research explored how recovery from addiction is cultivated and sustained over time through an existential lens. Stephanie’s practice is trauma-informed, culturally responsive and inclusive of neurodivergent clients, with attention to the wider social and personal context in which psychological difficulties develop.
